Many thanks to Rob, Jean, Mike and Laurence and all their committee members for last year’s efforts. As ever, the competitions seem to ‘just happen’ but it is not without a lot of work behind the scenes. We look forward to welcoming Brendan, Kim, Jeff and Will at the drive-in on 1st April and all members are welcome to come along on that day.

2.2       Men’s Section

A full calendar exists for the men’s section. The varied range of golfing competition and formats can be found at the back of this handbook. We have the usual medals and stablefords and plenty of pairs and individual competitions for you to enter. Keep an eye on the notice board in the locker room for sign up sheets.

The club matches are enjoyable social occasions. Teams are not selected on ability. The prerequisite of selection is an ability to laugh and stand your round at the bar. If you are un-successful once, try again; we do try to include as many players as possible throughout the season. For club matches, medals, whatever – do just join in and be a part of a happy, social golf club. After a beer in the bar results seem meaningless!

2.3       Ladies Section

The Ladies Section has a great atmosphere and warmly welcomes all new members. There are competitions almost every weekend, and we are pleased to see all members taking part. There are also fun events such as those in fancy dress - the Bring and Win, and our Breast Cancer charity day. Kim will be delighted to have a chat with anyone thinking of joining in.

2.3.1    Lady Midweek Members

Ladies’ Midweek Roll-Ups are on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the year – meet for coffee at 8am from April to October before going out to play at 8.30am. In the winter season, we meet at 9.30am before going out to play at 10am. All newcomers are warmly invited to join in for coffee, social chat and a game of golf for good measure. Do not worry about your standard of golf or not having a handicap – you will be looked after!

Terry Bunyan holds regular group lessons, which are very popular, and all-comers will be made welcome. We play in the Chiltern League, open to all 5-day and 7-day members, and there are friendly matches for those who prefer less pressure! There are also lots of club competitions, EWGA medals, midweek stablefords, and the very popular competitions for those with 30–36 handicaps.

Lady 5-day members are welcome to enter the following competitions without payment of a green fee: Lady Captain’s Day, Captain’s Day, Captains’ Charity Day, Lady President’s Day, Christmas Bring and Win, Good Friday Easter Competition, Medal of Medals.

The Seniors Section continues as a very active part of the club with roll-ups on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays throughout the year. We extend an open invitation to all newcomers to the club to join in these roll-ups and meet the seniors. Non-seniors are also invited to the roll ups.

The seniors are involved in a number of internal competitions during the year with details available on the seniors’ notice board.  We also play 26 matches against 13 other local clubs (home and away) and a further 8 matches in a winter league with a presentation event.  We will also have two away days, a Senior Captains Charity Day and support the other sections in a number of their competitions and events. The Senior's Four Nations competition will be in aid of  ‘Help for Heroes’.

Russell will hold seniors group lessons occasionally on Mondays. Watch out for details on the senior’s notice board.

We do hope you can join us over the coming year for social golf or to take part in competitions.  The section is open to all male members who are 55 years or over.

2.5       5-Day Members.

John Kitchen is the representative for the male 5-day members. John will be pro-active, so seek John out or leave him a message in an envelope if you have any suggestions for the       5-day section.

2.6       Juniors’ Section

We are hoping to have a great year in 2012 with regard to the junior section. We already have some really talented juniors, with low handicaps, and many congratulations to Bradley for making the East of England Squad. However, we only have a total of 17 juniors and are aim is to encourage more youngsters to the club this year.

Russell has been taking junior group lessons throughout 2011 and has seen 75 juniors attend his sessions. He will be laying on a range of lessons for different age groups in 2012 so watch out for his flyers in the shop. He will also run small, fun competitions over the front nine on the last Sunday of each month, approximately 2 ¾ hours before it gets dark. This won’t clash with members, as the 1st tee is quiet at this time as golfers approach the back nine. There will also be lessons on the short game as well as Vale League Training for older juniors.

David Lea has entered our juniors in a summer league along with Aspley Guise, Buckingham, Caddington, Mentmore, Millbrook and Woburn.

Juniors with a handicap of 28 and below are invited to enter the Men’s Medals. You can enter any of the junior competitions without a handicap, as we will use that round to help you to get your handicap.  Please speak to the manager on duty if you would like to know how to put in a card for your handicap. Parents please note that young juniors need to have a responsible person with them at all times and it is the responsibility of the parents to ensure this before leaving their children at the golf club. The manager on duty cannot fulfill this role.  Once Russell and David have them booked into a group junior lesson then they can be left.

3.       MEMBERSHIP NEWS

Our ongoing philosophy is to improve the golf course as much as we can each year, to keep member’s fees at a rate that offers good value for money and to retain the friendly family feel of the club.

3.1            Membership Enhancements

3.1.1       The SmartGolfer Network

The network continues to grow and offers great ‘added value’ to your membership. We now have 23 clubs in the network. As a full 7-day or 5-day member of AVGC you are able to have 2 free rounds per year on these golf courses and possibly more, subject to the host club’s acceptance:

Log onto www.smartgolfer.co.uk to find out more about the course that you are going to play.

Easy Guide to Network:

1. Get your free network ID card from pro shop. Cards need renewing from 1st March each year to ensure that only current members can benefit.

2. Book your tee time with host club.

3. Play golf and enjoy!

1. Take a small photograph (2.5cm x 2.5cm) of yourself to Tony, in the shop, and he will make up your network identity card for 2012. The card will state whether you are a 7-day or 5-day member. There is no charge for the card.

2. All 7 and 5-day members can play for free on the other courses, Monday to Friday. Seven-day members can also play for free at weekends and bank holidays, subject to availability at the host club. Pick up the contact details from the shop. Then book your tee-time with the club of your choice between 5 and 2 days in advance.

There are two new SmartGolfer Opens that you can enter next year. Friday 20th July 2012 is at Brighton and Hove (teams of 4) and Thursday 8th November 2012 at Bourn GC (teams of 4). Entry sheets to be posted out by host clubs.

The more detailed rules of the network are available from the pro shop and from the website at www.smartgolfer.co.uk

SmartGolfer Network Societies

When more than 4 network golfers want to play at a host course together, this is deemed as a ‘Network Society’. There are special reduced rates for these – simply enquire at our pro shop. For example, the rate Royston quote for network society golf is £12. However, the first 4 golfers can be free on the network. Hence, in this example, if  9 AVGC network members wanted to play Royston then they would pay 9 – 4 = 5,  @ £12 each, totals £60 for the 9 players.

3.1.2       Courtesy Golf at Chartridge Park Golf Club

Although Chartridge Park Golf Club has joined SmartGolfer Network, our association has worked so well over the past years that we are going to keep the old links going in addition to the new network.

We post ten dates, on which you can have courtesy at Chartridge Park, on the club notice board during April. On these dates we are not restricted to just two tee times.  We will request dates that are busy here at the Vale in order to help relieve congestion on our course. Simply telephone Chartridge on 01494 791772 to request a tee time.  Please note that white socks are required at Chartridge if you are wearing shorts. You will need your SmartGolfer ID card.

3.1.3       Reciprocal Golf with Caddington Golf Club

At weekends and Bank Holidays, you can book a game of golf at Caddington GC, after 11 am, at the ‘with member’ rate.

Monday to Friday (not including Bank Holidays) you can book at Caddington and there is no fee to pay.

You will need proof of your membership at Aylesbury Vale. Telephone 01582 415573 and ask for the secretary, David Isger. There is a smart, casual dress code.

3.1.4       County Card

There are many more local courses in the County Card Scheme. We are affiliated to Bedfordshire but this scheme also covers many other counties. This card costs £10, from the pro shop, and the money goes to Bedfordshire Golf Union. You can play the member courses at either 50% fee or ‘with member’ rate, as dictated by the host club.

3.1.5    E-Mail Newsletters to Members

Periodically we send e-mail newsletters out to members. These have course news, results, forthcoming fixtures, shop offers and lesson / re-gripping offers. Members wishing to receive the offers should give your current e-mail address to the member of staff in the shop. We only use the e-mail address for club matters and will not pass them on to anyone else.

3.1.6    Extended Membership Offers

We have a choice of two extended membership offers:

a.)    Four Years of Membership for the price of Three

b.)   Nine Years of Membership for the price of Six

These are worthwhile for the club because we reinvest funds into course improvements. The investing member also gets a really good deal with one, or three, free years of membership, and fixed prices for the full term of the membership. These savings have greatly outstripped possible returns from savings accounts and investments in recent years.

The extended membership offers are open to all categories of membership, new members and those paying monthly. Please speak to Chris, Neil or Tony if you are interested and we will give you a copy of the written guarantee that comes with the offer.

3.1.7    Members’ Discounts and Guest Rates

Driving Range tokens are discounted from £2.20 to £1.70 for a bucket of 35 balls. Buggy hire is reduced from £20 to £15. Members can also have a buggy season ticket for £300 for a year.

Any member can sign in up to three guests at the ‘with members’ rate provided that they are playing golf with them in the same fourball.  Five-day members can also sign in guests at this rate on weekends and bank holidays and the five-day member pays a £13 fee.

Midweek the ‘without member’ visitors fee will be £24 and the ‘with member’ rate £17.  At weekends the ‘without member’ rate is £32 until 7 a.m. and £25 after 11 a.m. whilst the ‘with member’ rate is £20.  All the rates quoted above are for 18 holes but day and 9–hole tickets are all separately priced in the shop.

All members get a 10% reduction in shop prices on any items priced over £10.

Members can hire the upstairs lounge for their own parties in 2012 at greatly discounted rates. Ask for a viewing if you haven’t seen the room as it has new furnishings and round tables.

3.1.8    Tee Booking Procedures:

Monday – Friday:                               No tee bookings required.

Weekend or Bank Holiday:                 No bookings required up to 11 a.m.

                                                            Book a tee time between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

No bookings required after 4 p.m.

Club notice boards and club website www.avgc.co.uk detail all tee closures for 3 weeks in advance (matches, leagues or societies).  Alternatively you can telephone 01525 240196.

To book a tee time                               Book a slot in the pro shop in person

                                                            Telephone 01525 240196 to book

Members can book 3 weeks in advance

On day                                                 Confirm your arrival in shop at least 10

minutes before due tee off time

‘Member only’ time periods:

(This allows members to bring guests, provided that they are playing golf with them)

Weekends and Bank Holidays             0700 – 1100

This represents quite an expansion in the ‘member only’ time period when compared to the 2011 handbook. However, we have had an increase in membership and experienced some busy week ends over the last year. It also acts as an incentive for non-members to join the club.

Check in for tee times at the shop.

At weekends, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., please ensure that you have checked in with the pro shop at least 10 minutes prior to your tee off time.   If no one from the tee group has reported in, or telephoned, within 10 minutes of the tee time then that time can be re-used. Communication with the shop is the key. Do telephone if you are running late and at least we may be able to promote a subsequent group up the tee sheet and leave their tee time for you.

3.2       Meeting Other Members

An 'Availability Book' is with the other files, above the pigeonholes. Please add your name, preferred playing time and contact telephone number to the file. You can then take a look at the other entries and give someone a ring to arrange a game.  Please remember that the member of staff in the pro shop is always on hand to fix you up with a game, so let us know that you are seeking playing partners as soon as you arrive and we will do our best.

You can enter a men’s medal without a handicap, as a vehicle to submit a card for handicap. You will be paired up with someone that already has a handicap and they will mark your card. You will also be given an exact tee off time. Obviously you cannot take part in the competition itself until the handicap secretary has allocated your handicap.

3.3       Avoiding the Busy Times

In the hallway, just outside the downstairs bar, are lists of all competition and society tee bookings for the subsequent three weeks. Keep your eyes on these to avoid the busy times. Club e-mails always include the next month’s forthcoming fixtures.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday are often busy between 9a.m. and 10.30a.m. with our seniors and midweek ladies.

The later you play at weekends the quieter it becomes. If speed of play is one of your primary considerations then use the weekly tee sheets at the club to avoid playing straight after a lengthy tee booking. The larger the field of golfers, whether men’s competition or society, the slower the round.

3.4       Young Golfers

Few junior members remain with the club when they are in their early twenties. We offer the following price incentives to try and reverse this trend:

Juniors                         (Up to 18 years)                      £160

Intermediates               (18 – 22 years)                        £270

Age                 Percentage of Full Fee

23                                40

24                                45

25                                50

26                                60

27                                70

28                                80

29                                90

This will hopefully encourage more young golfers to remain with us, now that the price jump from ‘Intermediate’ to full fee is not so steep. Russell will be teaching groups of juniors again in 2012 so do give his details to any junior golfers that you know.

4.       CLUB INFORMATION

4.1       The Pro Shop

Thank you to all members who have used the shop over the last year. We try to keep all prices that little bit lower than other pro shops - check us out! Members also receive a 10% discount on golf equipment, clothing and accessories priced over £10!

This year we hope to provide a custom fit service through Russell, possibly Snake Eyes and Callaway.

SHOP OPENING HOURS                  October to March   8 am – 4pm

April to September 7.45 am – 5pm (7 a.m. W/E)

Once the shop has closed you can always ask a member of staff in the clubhouse to open up again for you.

4.2       Competition Prize Credit

There is a card file system in the pro shop for competition prize credit. This can be spent on shop items, range tokens or buggies.

You can also add to the credit on your index card by paying cash. You can then pop in for a bag of tees / drink / chocolate bar etc. when dressed for golf and lacking change in your pocket.  Flick through the card file to check the level of your credit.

4.3       Club Professionals (Russell Phillips and Terry Bunyan)

 4.3.1   Lessons

We now benefit from 2 professionals at Aylesbury Vale Golf Club, each with their own unique style of coaching.  Russell is a PGA qualified professional who moved to AVGC midway through 2011.  He uses some of the most recent methods of coaching including his Video Equipment and Explanar Swing Ring.  Russell is keen to develop the junior activity at the club and therefore offers a large variety of sessions to suit all ages and abilities.  Terry has been our club professional for the past 8 years and continues to have a tremendous passion for the game. Terry has had some huge success in playing golf; one occasion was to make the cut for the first stage of qualifying for the British Open.  Terry thoroughly enjoys teaching and is happy to teach all abilities.

Both professionals teach adults individually or in groups and both have their own tailor-made lesson programmes to suit your budget and lifestyle.  Players who have lessons are seeing the benefits with good competition results and lowering their handicap.

There are often promotions for lessons throughout the year. These can be found displayed on the website under ‘Golf Lessons’, in the bar, changing rooms and other notice boards.  So keep your eyes open and don’t miss out!

ALL MEMBERS GET 20% OFF STANDARD LESSON PRICES

Prices for each of the following can be found on the website, in the changing rooms and on our club notice boards.

Individual Lessons.  This is the most effective way to better your game.  Having an individual lesson gives you the professional’s full attention to look deep into your swing and to find the key swing faults that need rectifying.  These can be used to develop your long game, approach shots, bunker play, chipping, putting or rules and etiquette.

Individual 9 hole playing lesson.  Here you will play with one of our club professionals through 9 holes of golf.  This gives them the chance to assess your game strategy on the course and gives you the chance to see how a professional plays.  These are very popular!

Ladies Group Session.   Terry runs ladies group sessions throughout the year.  Keep an eye out for his chalkboard to find out when the next one is taking place.

Senior Group Session.  Russell is running senior group sessions each month, usually on a Monday.  Keep an eye out on the senior notice board for the next session.

Junior Lessons.  Russell has many junior lessons available throughout the year for everyone.  He runs beginner sessions, advanced sessions, grouped or individual sessions, young sessions, older sessions, all for members and non-members.  To find out more, look on the website under ‘Golf Lessons’ or ring Russell on 07843692948.

4.3.2    Club Repairs and Re-Grips

Russell offers a full service of club repairs from broken shafts to club extensions or shortening.  If you have a club that needs fixing bring it into the shop to get a quote.  It is very important to have a good grip on your club!  Terry offers a re-grip service and often has promotions throughout the year.

We will attempt to complete all re-grips and repairs within 48 hours!

4.3.3    Custom Fitting

Russell has brought with him the new opportunity to custom fit your current clubs to suit your swing by altering the lie angle and loft or your clubs.  Having the correct lie angle is critical to help ensure the ball flies towards the target.

The professionals emphasise the importance of having the correct equipment to suit your swing.  Simple checks can be done to see if your clubs are set up correctly to get the best out of the swing you have.  It is important to have the correct grip size, shaft length, shaft flex, shaft torque, shaft bend point, iron head style, lie angle and loft, so make an appointment with one of our professionals now to find out more information.

We hope to work with Russell this year to sell some premium brands, like Snake Eyes and Callaway, completely custom fitted to suit your specification and needs.

4.4       Captain’s Charity

The three main sections of the club all combined together to support Willen Hospice and Leighton Buzzard ‘Otters’ Swimming Club for the disabled. The vice-captains are currently putting their heads together for the new charities from this April.

Sincere thanks to all members who raise our funds over the year. All the 50p pieces from landing in the Captain’s Charity bunker, or seeing their ball sink into the 13th pond, really do add up!

4.5       Member Charity Days

Many of our members are involved with fund raising for their own projects.  We have held events such as raising funds for a children’s play area, church steeple, cystic fibrosis, cancer care etc.  Should anyone wish to organise a fundraising golf day with us in 2012, Monday to Friday, then we will donate £6 per player to your cause from the green fee. A golf day can be one of the easier and more pleasurable methods of fundraising!  See Chris, Neil or Tony in the office for more details.

4.6       Catering

4.8       Club Opening Hours

The gate is opened by 6.45 a.m. during BST (6.30 a.m. at week ends) and 7.30 a.m. during winter (7.00 a.m. at week ends).  The gate is not locked until the last car has left the car park and it is therefore imperative to speak to the manager on duty if you need to leave a car here overnight.

The Clubhouse opens at 7.45 a.m. midweek and 6.45 a.m. at weekends.  Golfers teeing off earlier than this are welcome to leave their shoes undercover, by the back door, and we will transfer them to the changing room for you as we open up. You can pre pay for free format competitions, men’s and seniors, and obtain your date stamped scorecard in advance.

Russell will stay after closing times for golf lessons on the floodlit driving range, if required.

We remain open as long as there are golfers still on the course, driving range or in the Clubhouse.  Once darkness has fallen the Clubhouse will be closed if there are no golfers remaining on the premises.  We therefore recommend that golfers planning to arrive after dark should ring through to the Clubhouse on 01525 240196.

Please do contact us if you are planning a special event that would require a very early start or late finish and we will assist.

4.9       Social Events

We look forward to meeting with the newly elected committees in April and planning events with them. The first Member’s Christmas Party was a great success and will be repeated!

4.10     AVGC Website

The site is www.avgc.co.uk. and the e-mail address is info@avgc.co.uk .

4.11     Advertising

There are opportunities for members to advertise their business on our scorecards, entrance drive, buggies and driving range. Please see Chris, Neil or Tony for more details.

4.12     Personal Property and Golfing Insurance

Unfortunately, in common with other clubs, we cannot watch items of personal property and  "The management cannot accept responsibility for loss or damage to property or vehicles on the premises."  We have discussed the matter of security with our local crime prevention officer and most of the advice is common sense preventative measures:

a.  Always lock your car.  Use steering locks, immobilisers etc.

b.  Never leave anything on display but lock it in the boot. Laptops, mobile phones, sat navs and golf clubs are particularly at risk.

c.  Do not leave any items of value unattended.  This applies to items left within your golf bag as well as items left unattended in the changing rooms. Pay particular attention to your car keys, especially those with a remote unlock button. A thief with these keys can identify and unlock your car in an instant and will drive straight off.

Once you have finished golf for the day please ensure that you have taken your belongings home. We will have a complete clear-out of all abandoned items in the changing rooms on the first Thursday of each month, store them in black bin bags for one month and then throw them out.

On a more positive note we would recommend the use of lockers.  David Jones will administer these in 2012 on behalf of the committee.

Small lockers rent for £12 per calendar year. Large lockers cost £18 (they do not take clubs). Do contact David as soon as possible on 01525 220991 or preferably by djones9253@aol.com. There is currently a waiting list for members requiring lockers but existing lockers that are not renewed may become available. Small items of extreme value can be handed to management and locked away.

We strongly recommend that all members take out a golfers’ insurance policy since everyone needs cover in the event of injuring someone on a golf course or sustaining injury yourself. We have details of the EGU Golfer’s Policy, and alternative policies, in the office and both changing rooms. We are currently liaising with an insurance company about the cost of taking out insurance on behalf of all members and visitors. Full details regarding any developments will be posted on the notice board in the bar.

4.13     Five Day Members

Five-day members pay a reduced £13 green fee in the pro shop if they wish to play the course on weekends or Bank Holidays. On Good Friday no payment is required. There are a few other specific competitions, which may detail an exemption on the entry form. These include Captain’s Day, Lady Captain’s Day, Captain’s Charity Day and Presidents Day when all members are welcome to come along and enjoy the day.

5.       ON THE COURSE

5.1       Course News

We continue with the push to improve the course. Thanks must go to Luke, Rob, Andy, Ben, Jon, Tom and Steve for the steps taken last year. They can take some pride from the complements issued by Bedfordshire Past Captains, when they played this autumn, and many declared the greens to be among the best that they had played on this year!

a).        Greens

We bought a Toro sprayer this year and Luke has maintained a ‘preventative spray’ regime, which has kept us disease free this year. However, we keep our eyes peeled, as you never know what is round the corner! The aim is for a relatively quick, consistent, smooth roll of the ball. We think that the green staff probably achieved that target for the very first time this year. The greens are currently better than they have been in any winter, so hope springs eternal for a good 2012.

You may not have noticed, with regular play, but we have slowly expanded the size of the putting surface at the margins, wherever the contours of the greens have allowed, over the last three years. Luke’s next plan, to improve the visual look of the greens area, is to have a neatly cut fine turf surround. This is part of the reason for moving some of the greenside bunkers a little further from the greens, to allow for a neat apron.

b).        Moving trees.

We have moved a number of trees on the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th and 10th holes. The object is to tighten up some of the more generous holes and demand a little more thought and accuracy, particularly off the tee.  Rough within the tree copses:  We have continued to cut the lower limbs off the trees to allow for greater upward growth. On occasions we remove trees completely where the canopies are overlapping. This gives room for golfers and cutting machinery underneath the canopies. As a result we can keep the grass shorter and well maintained so the golfer can find the ball quickly. We can also take the sprayer into these areas, which means that we can keep weeds or clover at bay. The overall effect is hopefully a healthy tree-lined fairway that is visually attractive. However, although you can find the ball quickly, you still need accuracy with the escape shot to avoid timber.

c).        Pathways.

We will be laying some more areas of hard standing and further pathways this year.

d.)        Clearance of waterways.

Having cleared the streams and ponds we will keep on top of them to avoid them choking up with silt and reeds. These areas look better and attract more wildlife.

e).        ‘Spray curtain’ sprinklers.

The impact sprinklers have now been replaced with new ‘spray curtain’ varieties.

f).        Drainage on 6th fairway.

The drainage Rob put in just before the 6th green has worked well. However, there is a wet area near the stream, from the 150-yard trees, which will require drainage work into the stream later this year when ground conditions are firm again.

g).        Tee furniture.

We now have new tee furniture on each tee this year. There is a colour board depicting each hole, a ball washer, a towel and a bin.

h).       Main greens and tees in winter.

We will continue with the policy of playing off the main greens all year round, as we have for the last 15 years. There are never any noticeable ill effects from this policy in the condition of the greens come springtime. The finances and green keeping time that is saved by not having to prepare winter greens is utilized elsewhere.

We also now try to play off grass tees all year and avoid mats. So far, half way through winter, the weather has been kind and the grass tees have stood up well. We might move onto mats for the par 3’s if the main tees need a rest. Once again, the tees will be verti-drained periodically and dressed with sand.

i).         Practice chipping green.

The new chipping green should be ready to open this Easter. It was constructed with a meter of graduated drainage stone beneath the green and the irrigation system is now linked to it. Golfers will be asked not to putt on this green but to clear their balls quickly off the green so the next golfer can chip on. Indeed, the target flagsticks will be set in a length of tube, rather than a golf hole. The practice putting green is nearby.

j).        Practice bunker.

The practice bunker has only been roughly dug out at present. However, one week of work, just before Easter, should see this ready for use with the green.

k).       New raised practice grass tee.

Some members prefer to hit balls into the range from the grass rather than from within the driving range. To provide a better practice facility we are therefore going to build a large, flat, slightly raised grass tee. (only raised just enough to facilitate natural drainage). This will be built to the clubhouse side of the driving range.

Once the tee is ready to use, a rope will be stretched across it to denote the line to play from. We would ask all members to play from just in front of the rope so that all golfers remain in a straight line and hence safe from the shot ‘off the toe’ or ‘off the heel’. When a line of ground has several divots we will move the rope and repair the divots with a sand and seed mix.

l).         Driving Range.

You may have noticed some new boards being built around the bay dividers in the driving range. These will be covered in foam protection (like a rugby post). This is to make the range safer and ensure that all balls deflect harmlessly forward out onto the range.

m).       Teaching facilities in the driving range.

This year we extended the electricity up to the teaching bay at the end of the range. This means that Russell and Terry can now use video cameras for lessons so that you get great instant feedback on your swing. Russell has also bought the Explanar Swing Ring, which is a fantastic teaching aid. We have also installed a TrueStrike double berth teaching mat (for right and left handed golfers). This has gel pads in the strike zone and is the best mat that you can hit off. We are also going to board out the lower walls of the range. Russell is then going to attach mirror tiles to the walls so that you can look behind you and to the side to check on your alignment at different points of your swing. Thanks to Brendan for installing a new lights in the teaching bay.

We now have different coloured flags on small raised greens within the range to aim at. Once the back wall has been boarded out we will put up some posters indicating the various distances that each coloured flag represents. All practice balls that we now buy for the range are either Callaway or Srixon.

5.2 General Course Matters.

Protection of Young Trees - Local Rule on scorecard – The scorecard states that relief is available from young trees under six feet in height and the local rule is posted on the club notice board.  Please be aware that this rule will change this spring and the scorecards and local rules will both change. The trees have grown up now and no longer need protection.

Play from White Tees – White markers on the grass tees remain exclusively for competition play. If exceptionally, mats are in use in winter, then members, for social golf, may use any mat they choose.

Signs  “Greenkeepers have Priority” – We have signs for the course stating that greenkeepers have priority. We have already liaised with the greenkeepers and set up a system whereby the most intrusive jobs are completed first thing in the morning (cutting greens and surrounds) so that disruption to golfers is minimized. Then, if mowing the rough or mowing around trees is left until later in the day, there is more scope for the greenkeeper to move out of the way.

However, the task of maintaining and playing the course will inevitably clash at some point and we cannot stress strongly enough that a ball should never be struck if there is a chance of hitting a greenkeeper. Also, early birds teeing off before 8 a.m. should note that this is crucial greenkeeping time and that you may experience slight delays whilst greenkeepers finish off greenside work.

Klaxon - The klaxon will be sounded at regular intervals to indicate that golfers must walk off the course. This could be because of lightening, waterlogging or snow.

Members’ Assistance is required to progress the huge task of presenting the course well at all times.  A plea from the Greenstaff - please replace divots, repair pitch marks, rake bunkers and do not discard rubbish around the course.  The bins at each tee provide convenient rubbish disposal points.  Please use the seed and sand mix provided on par three tees to help divot marks recover. Thanks to Mike Ewart who has provided small boxes on some tees for broken tee pegs.

Trolleys Please keep all trolleys at least 10 yards away from the greens to protect the fine turf fringes. Trolleys should NEVER pass between the green and an adjacent greenside bunker.  We all play golf for the exercise - walk a little further to ensure good lies for those following.

Keeping the course in the condition expected by members is our aim.  Members are encouraged to speak to Chris for any information or to proffer their suggestions concerning the course.

5.3       Spikes and secure footing.

Although we do not insist on the wearing of metal spikes for winter, and leave the choice to each individual, it is strongly recommended that metal spikes are used.

We believe they give better grip in wet or icy conditions on slopes and on tee steps. There are certain ground conditions where ice can be crushed and picked up under the splayed soft spike.  These small lumps of ice then resemble rugby studs offering reduced grip and damaging greens. Please take extra care on all wood, sleeper or concrete surfaces when wet or icy. You are always at liberty to walk on the grass and avoid these steps altogether in extreme conditions.

5.4       Etiquette

The maintenance of good standards of etiquette on the course is for the benefit of all. Avoiding slow play and calling through is probably of greatest importance. Please take time to read carefully through the rules of etiquette for our club.

Rules for Calling Through:

Slower groups should call faster groups through.

Call through the following group if you are searching for a ball.

The maximum number of golfers allowed to play together is four. Five-balls are strictly prohibited.

Amplification of Calling Through Rules.

Slower groups should call faster groups through, even if the slower group thinks that they are playing at a reasonable speed.  Letting golfers through depends upon their speed, not their sex!  When searching for a ball, call through immediately and then use your ‘five minutes’ to continue your search as the others are playing through.

‘But they had nowhere to go!’  How often have you heard this lame excuse given by a fourball? The course is clear in front of Fourball A. Fourball B is playing behind them at the same speed. Twoball C come up behind Fourball B but are not let through because Fourball B thinks there is ‘nowhere for them to go’. Fourball B is breaching golfing etiquette. They should let faster Twoball C through, then  Fourball A can do likewise and Twoball C can be on their merry way.

Civility and Good Manners when Calling Through.

Communications between golfers is all a part of good etiquette.  Ideally golfers should call through without a request needing to be made.  However, if a request is necessary then please make it a polite one!  Hopefully, all concerned can then conduct themselves with good grace and the result will be a faster round for all golfers.

Competitions and Calling Through.

The fact that you may be playing in a competition off medal tees in no way excuses you for slow play or failing to call through.  Thus competitors in medals or individual matches, where you arrange your own start time (e.g. knock outs or mixed league matches), must call faster groups through.

The realities of teeing off behind a large field of golfers.

It is simply a fact that any large field of golfers, for example, men’s competition, large society, club match, will take longer to play 18 holes than a smaller field.  Therefore it makes practical sense for all members to plan to leave a time gap after any large group before teeing off themselves.

Divots.    Please replace and press firmly down.  On the tees divots should be filled with soil/seed mix if available.  Please warm up and take practice swings away from the tees.

Bunkers.   Please rake thoroughly after use. Push sand up bunker slopes.

Pitch marks.   It takes 20 minutes for the grass to die in winter or summer so please repair your pitch-marks as you play.

Starting on the 10th tee   There is nothing more frustrating than having your round interrupted mid-flow by golfers who are slow to start.  Priority must be given to golfers already playing the 9th hole.  You may start on the 10th tee if the 9th hole is clear but if you are subsequently caught up by golfers already 'well into their stride', then simply stand aside and call them through.  The chain across the path to the 10th tee with the 'closed' sign will indicate that all golfers must start from the 1st tee only.

Dress.    The rules regarding dress on the course are as follows: jeans, denim, tee shirts, tracksuits and non-tailored sports shorts are not appropriate for the course or Clubhouse.  Golf shoes are required on the course.

Indoor shoes are required within the Clubhouse (no golf shoes or stocking feet).  Outdoor waterproofs should be left in the changing rooms and not brought into the bar.  All members should also inform their guests of the dress standards.

However, should a guest be genuinely unaware of the required dress on their first visit then they will not be turned away. Please bring them to the pro shop where we have a range of washed and ironed clothing that they are welcome to use for the day without charge. A member of the Management will request appropriate dress on subsequent visits. Please advise your guests to carry their spikes up to the clubhouse and to change in the changing rooms so that they have their shoes for the bar and restaurant.

The new captains take office on 1st April 2012 and may liaise updates to the dress codes with management at that point. Any changes will be clearly promulgated within the club.

Dogs  Dogs are banned from the course. Guide dogs for the blind are allowed.

5.5       Trolleys

The three trolley states, dependant upon the severity of rainfall, are;

1.         ALL TROLLEYS IN USE.

2.         NO TROLLEYS.  This means trolleys cannot be used unless;

a.         You have a doctor's exemption certificate registered with the Secretary. (A photocopy of medical action taken, or similar, will suffice to avoid taking up a doctor’s time just for a golf certificate.)

b.         You are over 65 years of age.

3.         ABSOLUTELY NO TROLLEYS. This means that all trolleys are banned, regardless of medical certificates or age.

The course is assessed at 8 a.m. each morning to determine the trolley status.  Telephone calls are welcomed after 8.15 a.m. to discover the ruling. All trolleys should be kept at least 10 yards away from the greens, all year round, to ensure that the fine fringe grasses are not flattened for your delicate chip shots.

6.2            Competition Formats

There is a file above the pigeonholes that gives details of all AVGC golf competitions and formats.

6.3       Handicapping for Men

Whilst it is not compulsory to hold an official handicap, you must have one to compete in club competitions.  Some clubs require visitors to provide proof of handicap before allowing them to play their course.

The Standard Scratch Score and Handicapping Scheme administered by The Council of National Golf Unions is devised to achieve a uniformity and equity in handicapping throughout Great Britain & Ireland and has been in use since 1926.

There are ‘active’ and ‘inactive’ (i) handicaps. Any member who has not played in 3 qualifying competitions will have an (i) after their name to indicate that they are not eligible to play in Opens etc.

The main points regarding the allotment and alteration to handicaps is given below:

6.3.1    Allotment of Handicaps

The maximum handicap is 28 and a handicap can be allotted only to a member of an affiliated club.

To obtain a handicap a player shall submit three cards, each of which shall be signed by a responsible person acceptable to the handicap committee.

The cards should be put in the Competitions Box on the day the round is completed.  The cards should be marked clearly with ‘FIRST HANDICAP CARD’, ‘SECOND HANDICAP CARD’ or ‘THIRD HANDICAP CARD’ at the top and the date, your name and your membership number in the relevant places.

The HANDICAP COMMITTEE may allot a player an initial whole number EXACT HANDICAP less than the best score if it has reason to consider that a lower handicap is more appropriate to the player’s ability. In exceptional circumstances a higher handicap may be allotted than that indicated by the best score

If a player fails to return cards justifying an EXACT HANDICAP of 28.0 he may at the discretion of the HANDICAP COMMITTEE, be given an EXACT HANDICAP of 28.0.

6.3.2    Alteration of Handicaps

After each QUALIFYING COMPETITION the COMPETITION SCRATCH SCORE (CSS) is calculated as laid down by the Council of National Golf Unions (CONGU). The CSS takes into account the conditions of the day by reflecting the scores returned by players in categories 1, 2 & 3. Handicaps are adjusted against the CSS. Handicaps can be viewed on the computer in the downstairs bar.

6.3.3    Inactive Handicap

To maintain an active handicap a member must play in at least three qualifying competitions per January-to-January period. Not all competitions are qualifying and the competition secretary will confirm the competition status on the day of play. For a competition to be a qualifier it must be an individual stableford or medal and be played over the full length of course in conditions (course and weather) seen fit by the competition secretary to be fair to the whole field.

If your handicap has fallen inactive it is easy to return it to active status. You play in three qualifying competitions, you will not be able to enter to win but your scores will be used for regaining your handicap. You can also enter some supplementary scores and details of how to do this are posted on the information boards. For further questions please ask Leigh Jessiman.

6.3.4    Supplementary Scores

Supplementary scores are used, as the name suggests, to supplement your competition scores to enable the maintenance of a correct and active handicap. They must not be used as the only means of handicap maintenance.

For a supplementary score to be valid the following guidelines should be followed:

1. Log your intention to complete a supplementary round in the folder provided in the pro shop. This must be done before the round, and once logged in, the round must be completed and the card returned. Failure to return the card will result in a ‘no return’ and 0.1 adjustment up.

2. The round must be played from the white tees and under full medal stroke play rules.

3. The round must be witnessed by a valid Aylesbury Vale Golf Club member or PGA professional.

4. Only one supplementary round can be played per week.

6.3.5    Submitting General Play Scorecards

Leigh Jessiman is the current Men’s Handicap Secretary.  The following guidelines may be of use to you.

·       Please write ‘General Play’ clearly on top of the scorecard and not ‘For Handicap’.

·       Members should submit any card where their score is better than nett par, even when playing off yellow tees.  This also applies to games played on courses other than AVGC.

·       Any card with a nett score of nett par or worse should NOT be submitted for handicap revision in General Play.  Handicap adjustments upwards are only made on Qualifying Competitions.

·       You will be cut less than you think under General Play.  It is easier to perform well when you set off relaxed, with friends, in the weather of your choice, off yellow tees.

6.4       Men's Section Competition Rules

6.4.1    General Competition Rules

1.   All entrants must hold membership of Aylesbury Vale Golf Club relevant to the day of the competition.

2.   Entry to all competitions is restricted to members holding an official handicap on the closing date for entry to the competition.

3.   Junior and intermediate members with a playing handicap of 28 of less may compete in Men’s competitions.

4.   Members must pay for competitions by the closing date or have sufficient credit to cover the competition fee.

5.   Competitors who wish to withdraw from a competition after the starting times have been posted must record their Name and Tee Time on the Cancellation List for the relevant competition or notify the Golfing Secretary before the start of the competition.

6.   In all competitions a competitor must not leave the course before completing his round unless retiring through injury or illness. In any case, a competitor who is unable to complete a competition round must notify the Men’s Committee of the reasons in writing at the earliest opportunity.

Penalty for breach of this rule is suspension from competition for the next full month.

7.   Competitors must always return a scorecard (including No Returns) immediately on completion of their round. (Rule 6-6b applies).

Penalty for frequent breach of this rule is suspension from competition for the next full month.

8.   In all competitions with allocated tee times competitors must check in at least 10 minutes before their starting time (Rule 6-7 applies).

6.4.2    Match Play

1    Entry qualification is now in place for those wishing to in play in Singles or Doubles Knockout Match Play competitions; this includes men and seniors competitions.  To qualify for entry players must have played in at least three qualifying competitions, one of which must be a medal, during the twelve months prior to the closing date for entry.

2    Competitors are expected to arrange their matches as soon as possible after the draw is published. The onus to do this is placed on both parties in the draw.

3.   Matches must be played by the round closing date. The 'played by date' will not be extended for any reason other than 'COURSE CLOSED'. Course closed only occurs if on the FINAL day of the round the course is deemed unfit for play, in this instance the round shall be extended by one week. The decision that the course is unfit for play is the sole responsibility of the Golf Secretary.

4.   Players who experience difficulty in arranging their match should contact the Competition Secretary well before the 'play by date' to explain the problem. No extension will be given but due to circumstances brought to his attention the Competition Secretary is authorised to put an individual or team from an unplayed match into the next round.

5    The Committee may, at its absolute discretion, extend a round closing date if the course is closed for an extended period.

6    If no result is posted on the notice board by the round closing date, and neither party has contacted the Competition Secretary, then both parties will be eliminated from the competition.

6.4.3    Pre-Payment Scheme

1.   The pre-payment scheme applies only to entry fees for competitions that are not run through the Pro Shop (See each Entry Form for details).

2.   Put your money in an envelope marked with your name, membership number, amount and “Pre-payment Scheme”. This money will be credited to your account and will be shown in the next update of the credit list.

3.   Cheques should be made payable to “Aylesbury Vale Golf Club Men’s Section”.

4.   The credit list is updated to show who has paid for which competition from their account.

5.   Payment of entry fees from Pre-payment accounts will take place in sequence of competition closing dates.

6.   Part payment of entry fees is not allowed. Accounts will not be overdrawn to pay competition fees.

7.   The Scheme applies only to entry fees. Two’s Clubs will not be paid from your Pre-payment account.

6.4.4       Rules of Golf and Etiquette

1.   It is the responsibility of all competitors to know the Rules of Golf and the current Local Rules.

2.   Any dispute, or query, regarding the Rules must be reported to a member of the Committee as soon as possible. If a Committee member is not available, this should be done in writing (in the competitions box), before leaving the course.

3.   Any complaints regarding competitions must be submitted, in writing, to the Committee. These will be dealt with at the next meeting of the Committee and the decision will be notified to those concerned, in writing.

4.   Members are expected to conduct themselves properly at all times. The Committee will review instances of poor etiquette and take appropriate action.

5.   Members are expected to adhere to the dress code of the club.

6.7          Golfing Calendar 2012

The Calendar of Golfing Events has List Opens and List Closes columns so that you know when you can add your name to competition entry lists.

Those members looking to avoid the booked times can use the ‘1st Tee Closed From and To’ times as a guide. The times given represent our best estimate, based upon the number of entries for each competition in 2011. The exact time taken up for competitions in 2012 will be known, based upon the number of entries, by the List Close date. At this point we will update the Tee Reservation Board, in the clubhouse, with the more accurate information. (for example, how much tee time a men’s medal may occupy). We encourage all members to read this information, which is in the corridor just outside the downstairs bar. It will also detail times of visiting societies and club matches (Scratch League, Mid - Handicap League, Winter Scratch Foursomes, etc), which are not included in this handbook. Members can also telephone 01525 240196 for information that is updated daily or log onto www.avgc.co.uk and click on AVGC Golfing Calendar for weekly updates.
